In 1976, Rienk Dijkstra, working for Stork Plastics Machinery in Hengelo, was approached by Jo Bekkers, co-founder and former owner of Beckers Snacks BV, known for its frikadells. Together they conceived the plan to start a factory to make plastic packaging buckets for the Food industry. In May 1977, Bekkers and Dijkstra BV was founded.
After the necessary start-up problems, the company grew quickly and in 1980 the first expansion was realised. Mieke Dijkstra, Rienk’s wife, has since taken up a permanent position in the company and, with all her dedication and enthusiasm, takes care of administration, purchasing, sales and personnel matters.
The company grows steadily under the inspiring leadership of Rienk and Mieke Dijkstra and the time comes when Jo Bekkers retires from the company. In 1987, Rienk Dijkstra became full owner and the name was changed to Dijkstra Plastics BV.
In order to also be able to handle the printing of the buckets themselves, the first printing machines are purchased. The buckets produced no longer go only to the food industry, but also in increasing numbers to the paint, decorative plaster and flower industries.
By buying the neighbouring premises of “Drukkerij Hassink” in 1988 and converting them into offices, the growing number of staff is also well accommodated. Not much later, the next “neighbour” is also bought and the entire site covers more than 20,000 m2. Over time, the production hall and warehouse are expanded many more times.
Meanwhile, maintenance and new construction of injection moulds are a growing bottleneck. To get this better under control, the mould workshop was built on Tolstraat in 1999. With personnel taken over from Machinefabriek “Gemavo BV” and newly purchased metalworking machines, the company’s own tool shop was a fact. Meanwhile, all maintenance and new construction of injection moulds is done in-house.
A major metamorphosis was started in 2008 with the aim of expanding production capacity, optimising logistics and building new offices. Since the completion of this project, the office building of Dijkstra Plastics BV has been the eye-catcher of industrial estate ‘t Vark in Haaksbergen.
After holding a management position for many years, Auke Dijkstra takes over at Dijkstra Plastics in 2015.
With the 2016 acquisition of industry peer HK Plastics, Dijkstra Plastics strengthened its position in the European market. HK Plastics was founded by Oldenzaler Eddy Haasewinkel. The company was acquired by Berdal Rubber & Plastics in Almelo in 2006 and moved to Bedrijvenpark Twente in Almelo in 2010.
In 2018, production capacity will be expanded in Almelo and HK Plastics’ sales team will move to Haaksbergen to form one team together.
Dijkstra Plastics decides to further intensify its online presence by launching a webshop. More and more users want to buy their products through a webshop. The webshop offers the possibility to order small quantities (from 10 pieces upwards) of buckets.
Further integration of HK Plastics sees them continue under the name Dijkstra Plastics with a production site and office in Haaksbergen and a production site in Almelo.
On the initiative of Dijkstra Plastics, painting companies, restaurants, bars and festival organizers are personally approached to collect and save their empty buckets and hand them over during FIRE-OFF’s weekly collection round. FIRE-OFF recycles the used packaging, enabling Dijkstra Plastics to produce new buckets from the recycled material.
To continue our ambitions and strong growth, it was announced in July 2025 that Dijkstra Plastics has entered into a partnership with investment firm Navitas Capital. Through this collaboration, we will continue to pursue our long-term vision with the same management team and employees.

BRCGS is a standard for food safety. The standard describes the hygiene and food safety requirements for food processing companies that supply directly to the retail sector. You can also think of packaging materials for foodstuffs.
The FSSC 22000 Standard has been created through Stichting Certificatie Voedselveiligheid (SCV). As a food-oriented version of the ISO 22000 Standard, this certification programme has been set up as a global guideline in food safety and quality within various industries. This standard is aimed at the entire production chain and as such, it is ideally suited for international harmonisation, partly thanks to the recognition by the GFSI. In addition to its connection with ISO 22000, the FSSC 22000 has many comparisons with the HACCP criteria, making it an attractive variant with the best of both worlds from these programmes. Thanks to the internationally accepted nature of the FSSC and the chain-wide approach within this certification programme, we recognise a strong food safety management system in this standard.
