Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

On 11 February 2025, the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) entered into force. The main objectives of this European legislation are to reduce packaging waste, make packaging more circular, stimulate the use of recycled materials, restrict harmful substances, and create a harmonised European market for packaging.

The first obligations will apply from 12 August 2026. These requirements will affect the entire packaging value chain, from packaging manufacturers and fillers to brand owners, importers, and distributors.

As a packaging supplier, we are required to provide our customers with the information and documentation necessary to comply with the legislation. In addition, we use this page to share our knowledge, interpretations, and practical insights regarding the PPWR.

FIRE-OFF

Dijkstra Plastics is the first producer of plastic bucket to take its social responsibility by sponsoring a startup (called FIRE-OFF) that – for the benefit of end users – collects used plastic buckets and ensures their recycling into granules.

After FIRE-OFF has collected the used buckets from its customers, Dijkstra Plastics turns them into new buckets. In this way we create a closed loop together with the end user and offer used buckets a 100% guarantee of a new life.

PROCES

New production techniques and efficient processes lead to less energy consumption and lower CO2 emissions. Below are a number of measures that have been implemented at Dijkstra Plastics:

  • Producing with 100% green wind energy from Dutch soil (certificate: Haaksbergen | Almelo)
  • Replacing old injection molding machines with new energy-efficient installations
  • Energy-efficient process cooling installation
  • Optimal return systems
  • Transport with maximum loading

PRODUCT

All of our products are made from polypropylene (PP) and 100% recyclable.

We strive to provide all our customers from the non-food industry with buckets made from 100% recycled plastic. This way we do not have to use new raw materials. Also a CO2 saving of more than 50% can be achieved per bucket.

BRC Packaging

BRCGS is a standard for food safety. The standard describes the hygiene and food safety requirements for food processing companies that supply directly to the retail sector. You can also think of packaging materials for foodstuffs.

FSSC 22000

The FSSC 22000 Standard has been created through Stichting Certificatie Voedselveiligheid (SCV). As a food-oriented version of the ISO 22000 Standard, this certification programme has been set up as a global guideline in food safety and quality within various industries. This standard is aimed at the entire production chain and as such, it is ideally suited for international harmonisation, partly thanks to the recognition by the GFSI. In addition to its connection with ISO 22000, the FSSC 22000 has many comparisons with the HACCP criteria, making it an attractive variant with the best of both worlds from these programmes. Thanks to the internationally accepted nature of the FSSC and the chain-wide approach within this certification programme, we recognise a strong food safety management system in this standard.
